What: Time to WIP IT. Performers are invited to bring a work in progress (WIP), experiment, take a risk for three minutes. Come on stage without a plan or with too many plans. Bring an open mind and an open heart for your moment and others. 

There's a basic PA system to play music. There's a room where you can prepare and a back yard where you can hang with the community. You'll have a minute for set up, three minutes of stage time and one minute to clear. Sign ups begin at 7p. Names will be put in a jar. Two names will be drawn at a time to give a running setlist.

Open to clowns, performers, musicians and people who want to listen. $5 donation goes to NewNow, the venue. Hosted and produced by Dana Merwin. This event will take place every Tuesday in November.

What to bring: Open mind and good listening.

Dana Merwin is a clown and performer based in Oakland, Ca. She was born and raised in the swamps of Georgia. She has written and produced two live interactive clown shows. The Skinny Show - A Roadie’s Guide to Life, was directed by award winning performer Deanna Fleysher and is currently on tour.  Thinking Out Loud plays with the difficult topics of death and grieving through crafting and puppets. She is the creator, producer and director of the live holiday experience - The Ballad of Mrs. Claus, a show of original works from artists inspired by the untold story of Mrs. Claus. She has performed at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, The Moth Grand Slam Los Angeles, Rouge Fringe Festival and San Francisco Sketchfest. She has trained at the Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theater Intensive, the Clown School of San Francisco and Clown Improv Gym with Chad Damiani. When she is not performing, she is a live event and video producer. She has worked with the International Documentary Association, Al Jazeera America, Discovery Channel, Outside Lands Music Festival and a variety of independent productions. Her current project is the short documentary Clown Zoo.

    CAR. There is street parking. It is a residential neighborhood. Thursday and Friday are street cleaning days with parking restrictions between 1230p-330p. If you find parking limited outside the space, please try Brush St. It is the street at the end of the block. Do NOT leave any valuables in your car.

    BART. NewNow is a 10-12 minute walk from 19th Street Oakland BART. Arriving from San Francisco, you may prefer to take the first stop (West Oakland) and take a 5 minute LYFT or bike from there. The shortest distance to walk is from 19th St. BART.

    BIKE. Bring your bike into NewNow. There is a secure area in the backyard.

  • NewNow is a blue-gray building at the corner of 21st and West. There is no outside building signage. There is one 4 inch step into the space and two 4 inch steps down into the backyard. Typical to Bay Area spaces, there is no air conditioning. The space is usually comfortable with overhead fans and open windows. To help further prepare for your visit contact: info@newnow.live
